When approached by international tech startup Oska Wellness in 2015 to create their corporate identity along with the branding for their debut product the Oska Pulse, we partnered with 85SIXTY and immediately took to the task of thoroughly researching the technology, the industry and studied the competitive landscape. This research became the foundation for this project.
Oska Pulse, their debut product, is a compact electromagnetic field device intended to provide therapy by accelerating the body’s natural ability to heal itself.
SUPERBASE™
While searching for a suitable name for their newly prototyped device, the Australian founders were introduced to a Koala who was tragically orphaned after being caught in a bushfire. The staff at the wildlife center where the Koala was being nursed and treated by one of these unique devices called him “Oscar”. What better name than the phonetic spelling “Oska” (pronounced [ˈɔskɑ]) for this revolutionary product, a tribute to one of the first patients to have benefited from the device.
Superbase, Brand Identity By SUPERBASE Creative
Although it was initially proposed that an icon or graphic emblem should be designed to accompany the wordmark, we concluded that given the brand demographic, product category, and the unique nature of the name, there was no significant benefit to imposing an arbitrary icon in the primary logo, especially with a brand name that only consists of four letters- making it an ideal candidate for a logo that is based simply on the letterforms themselves.
Oska Logo Design Process by SUPERBASE™ 002
The resulting Oska brand identity consists of a custom logotype that was inspired by the electromagnetic field wave patterns and the ellipse-like shape of the device itself. We started with a series of circles and bisected these shapes to create four concentric characters that spell Oska.
Logo Design Process by SUPERBASE™
The logo was developed to promote high visibility of the mark balanced with clear legibility of the name.
We also made a conscious effort to design the letters in a way that didn’t imply they were an acronym, meaning we avoided any distinct resemblance to uppercase forms; the characters being uniquely neutral and nearly symmetric.
